LUISA HURTADOA
It’s a pleasure to write the story of Luisa Hurtadoa as the last blog post in 2020. Luisa Hurtadoa is a young brand, created a year ago by Luisa Hurtado, a Colombian designer, whose principal idea was to create artisanal, handmade and sustainable clothes, that will be simple and elegant , yet unique.
For Luisa, conscious of the current state of the planet, creating a business that is eco-friendly was a natural choice. She says “It’s time to stop producing without thinking if the product will be used, and what impact our production has on the environment. The world is becoming more conscious and people are starting to care about how the production process is conducted. They will have a choice between fast fashion, that we all know what is hidden behind (work conditions and environmental impact), on the one hand, and small brands and artisans, caring about good work conditions and the environment, on the other.” What would you choose? I couldn’t agree more. Let’s be optimistic about customer choices. We should not misjudge anyone.
The process. The pieces
Luisa works with local workshops from Barcelona, buys local materials and designs abstract ideas. Some clothes are inspired by her motherland and some by her observations of the modern world. She uses vegan leather, silk, wool and many other materials, all in a blanc and raw colour range, all sustainable. She has a very individual contact with artisans that work with her on a collection and is open to their advice, because she values their proficiency and experience. This is also how it looks in my wonderland and I’m even more touched by this beautiful soul.
SHE IS A STORYTELLER AND A PHILOSOPHER
Luisa’s first collection Onaromaz is not only original and classy, but also has an interesting message: duality of the phone communication. She remarks advantages and disadvantages of the phone in human lives, and its effects on our daily routines. On the one hand, it brings us closer to people far away and gives us the opportunity to unite. On the other hand, it tears us apart by making people less present. To show this duality, Luisa uses textures that have an opposed feel and sensation, like for instance silk, wool and vegan leather.
CHALLENGES
The challenge for Luisa lies in sustainable materials’ availability and prices, which makes the production more expensive and raises the final price for customers. But it’s honest to pay for a production of clothes that we will keep for years. We need to remember that if it’s not us that paid the price, then someone else did – workers, the planet or both.
Thank you, Luisa, for this conversation. I wish you all success in the world! Keep being optimistic – I will do the same. I know for sure that many people will join us.
Will you? Yes I’m talking to you ; )
